Living Montessori: The Parent Perspective from American Montessori Society.

Introduction To The Montessori Method

The Montessori Method of education was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. It is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. Dr. Montessori’s Method has been time tested, with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures throughout the world.

In As Much, Early Childhood Education Program Founded in 1980

It was one of the first in the county to offer early childhood educational programs. It has licensed capacity of 96 children. Children who are age six weeks to 5 years are cared for on a full-day or part-day basis. In As Much is licensed by Florida Department of Children and Families license # C07V00071 for a capacity of 225 children.  We continue to strive to achieve the highest standards of practice and currently hold two accreditations; COA (Council On Accreditation), APPLE (Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environments) and Gold Seal the highest recognition from the Florida Department of Children and Families.

For many children this will be their first of many steps on the road toward independence, their first experience with the world outside their home and family. This first step is very exciting, and a time of transition for children and parents alike. We help encourage each child’s natural tendency toward growth, while at the same time, understanding their need for safety and security. Before children can become truly independent, they must be able to have confidence in themselves and to have confidence with the adults in their lives. Children develop this trust through experiences in coping successfully with small doses of independence. It is our end mission to create a parent–teacher partnership to help children gain the self-confidence needed as a basis for active learning. This close working relationship provides a sense of security for the child entering school. Parent and teacher work together to help promote children’s growth and development. Parents are encouraged to become involved in the growth and development of our program though participation in the Parent Advisory Committee and through interaction with the staff.

We offer a planned Montessori curriculum, which includes: language, geography, practical life, sensorial, creative and academic art, block building, dramatic play, graces and courtesies, math and science activities, music, Spanish, outdoor activities, cultural diversity and activities designed to meet the needs of individual children. Children are encouraged to question and explore their environment. Literacy skills are developed in their language rich classrooms.

We are committed to providing unsurpassed care to families who need or desire care outside their home through existing programs and to the pursuit of new opportunities for services to children and families in Volusia County, consistent with our expertise and mission.
